Mario Game review

Introduction:

This week our tutor Padraig told us to play and review a Mario game online, the site i played the Mario game on was; http://www.dan-dare.org/FreeFun/Games/More/NewMarioFlash.htm
The game I'm reviewing is "Super Mario Bros". This is a side scrolling 2D flash game where you can play as either Mario or Luigi through different levels, each level offering new obstacles for you to beat.

Presentation:

The presentation for the main menu for this game is good, its colourful and it is also animated so that Mario and Luigi run across the screen, i liked the animation because it catches the players attention immediately. The next menu screen you meet is when you pick whether you want to play as mario or luigi, this is also another feature i liked as in these 2D flash games, even a different costume makes a difference. From here you move onto the level select menu, which will only allow you to select different levels as you complete them.
The Presentation of the game is similar to previous Mario games, its the same static background, the game ground graphic, the same pipes, enemies and character costumes, i found that these graphics, as with its predecessors get boring and stale after a short while.

Gameplay:

The gameplay for this mario game wasn't up to standard, it was glitching and lagged quite a bit. as mario games depend on the smoothness of its game play so that you can jump from block to block. Other then that it wasn't too bad, running didn't lag or glitch neither did shooting fireballs or moving down pipes. Another fault i found with this version of super mario bros was that the maps had been adapted to be slightly harder or easier depending on the level, for example, on lv1 the distance between some blocks was so small that jumping from block to block was almost certain death.

2-D Game feedback.

Since creating my 2-d game "target countdown" the game has been tested by a class of my peers, the feedback gave both good and bad news and although the game has many aspects that people enjoyed, it did have glitches and features some people weren't very impressed with. Most of the game was fine, the menu, instructions, characters, basic idea, scoring and timing system were fine. However the game did have some bugs e.g. when the start button was clicked the final ranking screen would show up, but when start was clicked again the game would play as it was meant to, some people complained that the characters lagged slightly while walking and that made the game slightly harder due to that fact that the targets would rock back and forth. that was it for the positives and glitches however some possible improvements were suggested including making the final ranking screen more colorful and appealing and adding some more detail to the overall level, all of these points will be taken on board and i will work to improve the game as soon as possible.

Target Countdown

I have completed my 2-D game, it is a single level timed sniper game that counts your score after the time runs out and then gives you a ranking, the game has changed quite a bit from the initial idea but i am very happy with the end product.
